The market originally opened on its city centre site in 17th October 1856. Prior to 1856 all stock was sold in the main streets of the city. By virtue of the Hereford Improvement Act 1854 the City Council were authorised to purchase land for the purpose of making market places and by the same act they were given power to discontinue the use of the streets for markets. The land was bought in 1855 and the original premises created.
