A Childhood Playground

“I was born in Widemarsh Street in 1940 and I lived right next door to All Saints School. I came from a large family of eight children (and) although we had a garden it was purely to feed us, so not much room to play. So Dad, Thomas Bigglestone… asked whoever was in charge for permission for us to play in the cattlemarket, as we were not allowed to play in the street! Most of all the other children from around Blackfriars, Coningsby Street, Newmarket… we all played together, never caused any trouble nor did any damage.”
